Australia: WA: Closed border creates truck driver shortage

As reported by the Kalgoorlie Miner: August 28, 2020 -- Western Australia is facing a shortage of up to 500 truck drivers as a flood of mining and government contracts lure existing drivers and closed borders put the brakes on interstate workers coming across to fill in the gaps.

Some companies require up to 30 drivers -- while those servicing the Pilbara’s iron ore sector are reportedly struggling to fill spots just to cope with existing demands.

Being just weeks out from Western Australia’s 2020 harvest, concerns have been raised that roadworks contracts are attracting drivers who would otherwise be turning their focus towards grain transport.
